Genoa and its Bodyguards

Like any respected important character, Genoa also has its own bodyguards: the "New Walls" (Mura Nuove) and the Forts. Built in the seventeenth century to better defend the city, this colossal work that encircles Genoa from the Lantern (Lanterna) to the Bisagno Valley measures an impressive 12 km in length, holding the record as the longest city wall in Europe, second only to the Great Wall of China worldwide! Over the centuries, the walls have been supplemented with the construction of forts and towers which, now that their defensive functions are exhausted, offer breathtaking views and a wealth of anecdotes ranging from sieges, executions to events concerning historical figures. Combined with the history that permeates these paths, there are also interesting geological and botanical insights that complete the picture of a highly suggestive excursion, suitable for all and easily accessible by private or public transport.
